Fresne: Twin Kingdoms of Harrow Pass
The Five Houses of the Southern Kingdom
The kingdom in the south, which is a conglomerate of five ruling families, is situated at the southwest border of the il’under. At various times each if the houses have been in ascendancy, with ruling power ranging from tenuous coalitions between monarchs, and at other times a sovereign dictating by absolute fiat.
The current ruling house of Isthmarus is led by Isthmana Doriama of Isthmarus, the daughter most fit to rule at the time of Igmentum’s passing, the father who formed the alliance that has brought about the most recent “peace”, called such not referring to an absence of war, but rather an absence of internecine power struggles and internal strife. There have been nine such recorded peaces known to history. Igmentum’s peace was ushered in when he led the principalities successfully against the incursion of the Lo Moreh (which is short for Lo Moreh Ha Nash Ahr Nithi), a dragon-like humanoid race who sought to carve out a piece of the Pah’ren for themselves. Igmentum’s defeat of the Lo Moreh cemented his right to rule under the ancient laws of the Southern Kingdom, which, despite a preference towards heredity and male-oriented primogeniture, have always based the right to rule on the fitness of the candidate at the time based on the intelligence and cleverness of the candidate, their ability to muster a majority of support and lead effectively, and to maintain their political power, and thus the peace that they so pride themselves on.
The house of Braech is ruled by Edomna, a monarch highly regarded by his people, and is located at the center of the kingdom, a principality that bears the Braech name.
The house of Syranthun currently lacks a powerful enough leader as such, but is led by the young Medonun Osyran, the thoughtful if timid heir to the throne. Medonun has several siblings that are simultaneously advisors and rivals. Medonun comes from a word used to describe wild animals that are at once wild and savage, but easily alerted, a word that often mistranslated as “afraid” or easily frightened”.
The house of Young rules in the south next to the house Syranthun, and is ruled by Paramond, the bastard son of Irelius, whose will to power and unmitigated avarice of his youth eased in age, making him one of the most beneficent monarchies on record.
To the west, and closest to the trade roads is the kingdom of Ara Ashrama, led by the beautiful Nidan Oshra, the monarch who consolidated rule within her own kingdom by marrying both of her rivals to power, Maran Oculans and Endeywrin, both generals of renown and leaders at the time of a rare power vacuum in Ara Ashrama. The clever Nidan courted them both secretly, and in the end they were both so in love with her that they agreed to tolerate the other. The house is situated in two fortified “homes,” keeps property speaking, though with much comfort, as the trade roads bring much commerce and tolls, and thus wealth for the house. Maran and Endeywrin each live in a house seeing to martial business and keeping their heirs that Nidan has born them, while Nidan spends most of her time in a third castle tending to matters of state and where she works to consolidate power from amongst the other four families. There have been as many as nine families throughout the kingdom’s history, and one has relocated to the Garenne in the west, ostensibly in disgrace, though they live a prosperous existence there and maintain (secretly) many political ties to the Southern Kingdom.
Though magic is looked down upon in both the Northern and the Southern Kingdom, there are some who will support the fledgling acolytes with the hopes of harnessing their power once ripe. And then there are those who simply wish to maintain and support this ancient mode of inquiry despite its inherent risks and the potential for political upheaval as a result of wide spread use of magic.
